Postgraduate medical studies in the UK can be very rewarding, and a great boost for your career. Before you travel to the UK to undertake your training, you'll need to first obtain your limited registration. This registration is only available in educationally approved, supervised posts, to ensure you receive proper training.

A wide range of examinations/qualifications for medical professionals are offered. The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) Test is designed to assess your knowledge and skills, and your ability to work safely in your first appointment as a senior house officer in a British hospital. The Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) exams are considered as an entry qualification for higher specialist training in the UK and membership to various professional bodies.

PLAB Registration

To register for Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) Test follow these simple steps.

1. Check you have a primary medical qualification accepted for limited registration.
2. Consider whether you have the appropriate postgraduate clinical experience.
3. Check the situation regarding job and training opportunities with the British Council.
4. Check you are eligible. You need: - a primary medical qualification accepted for limited registration (see step 1 above) - an IELTS Test Report form (valid for two years only) with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and minimum scores of 7.0 in the speaking section and 6.0 in each of the other sections (listening, academic reading and academic writing) - 12 months postgraduate clinical experience from teaching hospitals and other hospitals approved by the medical registration authorities in the appropriate country.

It is possible to take the test without this experience, but only for subsequent employment as a house officer (the grade occupied by new medical graduates) rather than as senior house officer. You have to complete a form given by GMC so that it can confirm your eligibility and check that the PLAB Test is the right route to limited registration for you

TYPES OF TESTS PLAB

Part one:The first part consists of a single computer markable paper to a standard set using the Angoff method.

Part Two:The second part consists of a 14-station objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). This tests both clinical and communication skills.

You may not enter second part until you have passed the first part. You must also take the second part within three years or four attempts after passing part 1.

PLAB SCORES / MARKING

Results are either 'Pass' or 'Fail'. Candidates who pass will receive, along with their results, an application form and information pack on part one of the Test. Candidates who fail part one of the Test may re-apply.
